PROTESTA CONTRO I LABORATORI COVANCE
Covance
Inc. č un'azienda specializzata in vivisezione per conto terzi con filiali in 18 paesi, 6000 dipendenti, un fatturato
di circa 900 milioni di dollari. Lavora per conto di 50 imprese farmaceutiche e
biotech.
L'azienda,
"tra le prime al mondo per lo sviluppo di servizi farmaceutici",
alleva e vende cani, conigli, porcellini d'India, topi, maiali, scimmie e ha
perfino brevettato una razza di cani, il "mini-meticcio".
La filiale tedesca, a Münster, č il laboratorio che in Europa fa il maggiore uso di primati non umani: 2000, tra macachi e scimmiette tropicali.
Su
cui vengono svolti test di tossicitā, studi sul cancro e istopatologia.Grazie
alla documentazione video fornita da un infiltrato e diramata dalla British
Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, il laboratorio tedesco č al centro di
un'accesa campagna di protesta,.Tra i documenti forniti dall'informatore
animalista, c'č anche un video - raccolto con una microcamera - che mostra come
vengono trattate le scimmie recluse. Il video č stato prontamente censurato in
Gran Bretagna.
Mentre
un'investigatrice della PETA č stata assunta dalla Covance come tecnico,
e dal 26 Aprile 2004 all' 11 Marzo 2005 ha lavorato all'interno del laboratorio
di Vienna, in Virginia, dove vengono eseguiti test sui primati.

documentazione video dell' investigatrice all'interno del laboratorio č
iniziata il 30 Luglio 2004.
La
Peta ha riempito 273 pagine di
protesta contro l'USDA per le violazioni del Animal Welfare Act (Legge per la
difesa degli animali) che hanno avuto luogo durante l'investigazione segreta a
Covance. Peta ha scritto al Segretario all'Agricoltura Michael Johanns per
chiedergli di visionare personalmente la protesta.

Secretary Johanns:
I
am e-mailing to ask that you take immediate action to ensure that allegations of
horrendous animal mistreatment at Covance will be thoroughly investigated by the
USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service under your direction.
Video
footage captured by PETA's investigator shows Covance employees slapping,
choking, hitting with hard plastic, and frightening primates by staring into
their eyes and swinging them in the air.
Obviously
these behaviors are not present when the USDA inspects Covance once a year!
It
is appalling that the animals at Covance have gone insane from lack of
companionship and psychological enrichment when Congress made it clear to the
USDA in 1985 that primates need these fundamental considerations. You are new to
the agency, and we hope that you will find it in your heart to correct the
horrible injustices brought to light through PETA's investigations.

are writing to share with you the findings of
Peta investigation at Covance Laboratories, Inc., located at 9200 Leesburg Pike,
Vienna, VA 22182.
Peta
investigation has uncovered serious and chronic violations of
the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) (21 U.S.C. §§ 301 et
seq.) and implementing regulations that govern laboratory practices for
nonclinical laboratory studies (21 C.F.R. §§ 58.1 et seq.).
Simply
stated, standard practices at Covance-including gratuitous
physical and psychological abuse of primates-undermine the quality and
integrity of data generated by the studies and thus undermine the purpose of the
FDCA. We respectfully request that the FDA investigate this matter and take
appropriate enforcement action.
